Demons

A/N This story is inspired by one of my all-time favourite songs: 'Demons' by Alec benjamin. Some of the dialogue is song lyrics. After you read this, check out the song!

...

“Wait.”

Luca turned, staring at me expectantly. I suddenly can’t speak. My brain goes numb, and I hate how he does this to me, because I can’t hide from him, and he leaves me with no dignity.

“What, Nora?” He takes a step forward, closing some of the distance between us. What’s left still seems endless, though.

“Don’t go.”

“Why not, my sweet?” He says it mockingly. Shame tinges my cheeks red, and I stare at my bare feet sinking into the dewed grass. “You certainly had no issues leaving me.”

He pauses. I wait. Feel his eyes on me, willing me to look up.

“Well?”

And I realize he really wants an answer. He wants me to give him a reason to stay, but I can’t because I will never be worth his time. Jemma made sure I understood that, even when she was on the verge of death.

“I—”

“Mhm?”

“I’ve got all these demons,” I breathe. “Hiding underneath.”

Nobody can see them. Nobody but me. And you’re

“The only thing that keeps me from diving off the deep end— is… it’s— I—”

He’s suddenly much closer than before, his eyes burning into mine. He raises an eyebrow, points to himself. He’s waiting for me to nod, and I do.

“We’ve all got a dark side, Nora, but I—”

“No, listen,” I interrupt. “For a moment I thought maybe I was doing alright

So I took your love for granted and I left you behind. I didn’t— didn’t understand that you’re the one who kept me alive.”

I look down, unable to meet his eyes. I hear him sigh and his arms are suddenly around me. He pulls us both down onto the leafy forest floor before letting me go. The world starts to blur and I can’t think— I can’t — I can’t do this anymore.

“Darling Nora, I know it’s hard for you, but— oh, don’t cry! Look, I can’t only be there for you if you’re never there for me. Can’t you understand that it’s not just you who struggles?”

I shake my head, trying to will him to understand. I feel the change as it happens, and I close my eyes. I hear Luca gasp in horror as he realizes it as well. Jemma once told me what I look like when it happens. She said I began to float, a black cloud surrounding me, my raven black hair surrounding me as if I were submerged in water. She told me she had nightmares about it.

I open my eyes, trying to force back my power. I fall back to the ground, standing over Luca. Before my eyes roll back in my head, I whisper, “demons… underneath… nobody… can see them…”

“YOU’RE A TRUEBORN?!” Luca shrieks. Surprisingly, he doesn’t back away from me. Instead, he holds me closer. He sighs, whispering under his breath. Minutes pass, or maybe days. For all I know, he holds me for centuries as the entire world dies and there’s nothing left but me, him, and the cloud of horror and pain that lives inside of me.

“We’ll figure this out,” he whispers, finally. His hand finds my chin, and he tilts my head up so he can meet my eyes. “I’m going to help you with this one, but this time, you have to remember that love is a two-way road. Promise?”

I nod, hoping with all my heart I manage not to hurt him this time.
