The Heart of Darkness— Chapter 5

A/N This is a Collab between me and Dreamstar (formerly known as Stargazer) Check out her blogs here: Pen Post & FandomClan

The letter read:

Hello, Jaiden Lightning,

As Queen of Oceadore, I have decided to send you on a quest to the other four Kingdom leaders, in search of allies. We need backup, in case the Shadow spawn betrays us. It wouldn’t be entirely his fault, of course, but you must understand that I like to be prepared. If all goes well he will be a valuable soldier, as always.

The information you will need to reach each kingdom is attached below:

The kingdom of Terra

  • Tribe of Sundown forest.

  • Ruler: Queen Hazel

- Welcomes visitors, so long as you do not harm the wildlife

Behavior of soldiers we have encountered:

  • Down to earth and welcoming {One might say to the point of foolishness}

  • Only a threat when the environment is hurt.

  • Not always sweet and kind

The Araceli Kingdom

  • Village in the clouds. Moves around but is currently anchored above New York City.

  • Invisible to the human eye, but some magic can fix that.

  • Ruler: Queen Roxanne.

- Strict, serious, straight to the point. Wary of newcomers, though not mistrustful.

Behavior of soldiers we have encountered:

  • Do not act without the queen's word.

  • Violent when provoked

  • Will consider everyone a threat until further investigations.

The Ignis Kingdom

  • To find the kingdom: Go to the hot and spicy restaurant in Queens, ask for the table in the far right corner, and order a ‘Blazing inferno.’ Suffer through all of it, and you will arrive at the Kingdom. {NOTE: Visitors must be fireproof}

  • Ruler: Prince Ember

- Nasty temper, sarcastic, and clever.

Behaviour of soldiers we have encountered:

  • If they attack, you do not stand a chance.

  • Hand-picked as the most clever citizens.

The kingdom of Umbra

  • Constantly nighttime

  • Ruler: Queen Aloke and her council

- DO NOT trust her unless circumstances are severe. Lurks in the shadows and spies on everyone.

Behavior of soldiers we have encountered:

  • Lurk in the shadows and watch.

  • Only intervene when they must.

  • They know what they are doing.

That is all you need. You leave in three days' time. Pack light, and be prepared to lose any possessions you bring along. I will be in touch soon for last-minute details.

Good luck,

Queen Daryah Avonlea Chantara Tallulah

“What does it say?” Aiden was wringing his hands to the point Jaiden thought they might wrench out of their sockets. She reached over and gently flattened his hands before handing him the parchment to read through.

His eyes flitted over the words, and when they reached the end, he stood up and began to pace, cursing under his breath. Jaiden was glad her parents weren’t home, or they might’ve tried to ground her friend for the words he was using. Or ban him from the house. Or… who knows what else.

“Okay, I have to go,” He told Jaiden, finally calming down a bit. “I bet she wants you to go alone, but I'm going to try to get her to let the shadow spawn go with you. Or someone trustworthy, at least.”

He said the words ‘shadow spawn’ with so much venom, Jaiden could’ve sworn there was poison puddling on the floor.

Jaiden nodded, holding out her hand for the parchment. He handed it over before playfully saluting at her. And then, before she could open the door for him, he jumped out of the window.

Jaiden screamed as she stuck her head out, bracing herself to find Aiden’s broken body. Instead, what she saw was almost scarier. He’d encased himself in a mini shadow tornado. It wasn’t destroying anything, which was good, and Aiden landed on the ground running. She watched until a blinding white light erupted in the distance, informing her that he was on his way back home. Left again, Jaiden thought miserably, staring at the spot Aiden had been seconds before. A wave of fury suddenly surged over her. How dare Queen Daryah call Aiden ‘The Shadow Spawn’! Jaiden wanted to rip her apart. But... this was her only chance to do something useful. What should she do?

She sighed, sitting down and holding her head. It was all such a mess, and Aiden was torturing himself, she had to go on a maybe-solo death trap quest, and in the end, none of them might even survive.

She stood up, trudging to her room and noticing the pile of unfinished homework she’d shoved onto the floor so she could use her desk space for sketching. She bent down, picking up her planner and groaning from the amount of work listed. Might as well start.

She sat down and trudged through her workload. It took forever, and she really didn’t want to do any of the stupid, pointless assignments her teachers assigned her. She didn’t even notice she’d dozed off and was drooling on a scrap piece of paper until her mom called her for dinner.
